From Takeoff to Transformation: How Migration Stretched Me, Strengthened Me, and Reshaped My Identity

By Candice Bailey | Embrace the Stretch Blog

What felt like a flight into a beautiful future turned out to be a spiritual, emotional, and mental marathon. One I didn’t know I had signed up for. One I wasn’t entirely ready for—but one that changed me completely.

July 11, 2023. The sun was high, and my heart was full of both hope and hesitation. My dear friend accompanied me to the airport, unknowingly becoming part of one of the most significant transitions of my life. I had just completed a two-year teaching contract and was stepping into a new chapter filled with unknowns. Would I teach again? Would I start a new career path? Would my life unfold as I had imagined?

On the way to the airport, the vehicle broke down—not once, not twice, but five times. Each time the engine failed, my anxiety grew louder. Will I miss my flight? Will we get help in time? Is this a sign I shouldn’t go? But my friend—resilient and unwavering—kept moving forward. With a few prayers and determined steps, we made it. And I hugged her for the last time without realizing that stretch would birth a version of me I’d never known before.

That day, I didn’t just board a plane—I boarded a transformation.

The Silent Stretch of Migration Let me be honest: no one tells you what it really feels like to migrate.

Migration strips you of your comfort zone and uproots your sense of security. It tears you away from your routines, your community, and your identity as you know it. Suddenly, everything familiar becomes foreign.

For me, that journey started with the excitement of seeing Nicholas—now my husband—and meeting his family. There was love, yes. Joy, yes. But there was also grief, guilt, and growing pains that no passport or visa could prepare me for.

The moment I stepped foot on American soil, it became clear—I wasn’t just in a new country. I was in a new life.

And that life required a new language—not English, but the language of adaptation, resilience, and trust in God.

The Hidden Curriculum of the Stretch This wasn’t just a relocation—it was a redefinition. Everything changed.

I had to understand and live within a new system: unfamiliar laws, processes, and cultural norms.

I had to apply for new identification, a new driver’s permit—a new identity.

I was no longer “Miss Andrews the teacher”—I was a wife, a migrant, and a woman learning to breathe again in an unknown land.

One of the most stretching experiences came through the immigration process. My husband and I went through interviews that felt more like interrogations, all in the name of proving our marriage was real. Our green card case was delayed. Our future felt suspended in a cloud of paperwork.

We were left wondering: What if we don’t get approved? What if we’re separated? What if all this was for nothing?

And then, two weeks later—we got the email. Case Approved. Two words that lifted the weight of a thousand questions.

But here's the truth: what that process built inside us was even more valuable than the approval. It built character, capacity, and connection.

3 Lessons the Stretch of Migration Taught Me Migration isn’t just about geography—it’s about growth. And here’s what I learned in the midst of my personal stretch:

What is familiar cannot sustain your future. God will often remove you from your comfort zone so He can equip you for where you’re going, not where you’ve been.

There’s no growth in your comfort zone. Painful as it was, every challenge expanded my capacity to trust God in ways I never had before.

God is in the middle of the stretch. Even when the car breaks down. Even when the paperwork delays. Even when you feel like you’re alone in a strange place—God is working behind the scenes, building you for purpose.

Final Boarding Call: Embrace Your Stretch Maybe you’re reading this and you’re in the middle of your own migration—whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. You’re being stretched in ways you didn’t ask for, and you’re wondering if there’s anything waiting on the other side.

Let me assure you—there is.

There’s a stronger, wiser, more anchored version of you on the other side of the process. But that version won’t be revealed in your comfort zone. It will only be birthed in the stretch.

So I invite you: Embrace the Stretch.

It may not be easy. It may not be clear. But it will be worth it.

Stay on this journey with us. Keep showing up for yourself. And let’s keep growing together.
